“Knowledge of nutrition at a biological level is not enough – providers need to be just as well-versed on the ecology and politics of food, or at the very least, the resources available to the populations they serve.”
Loved this line! The problem with saying “food is medicine” is that it’s not inclusive to the population it needs to serve.
As someone with a chronic disease (ulcerative colitis) it really irks me when people say that I shouldn’t take medication because food is medicine. I take medication *and* I avoid foods that cause flare ups and I eat foods that make me feel good to alleviate symptoms. But food won’t cure my autoimmune disease. Food is a tool I can use along with my medication to feel better. Thank you for this well rounded piece!
A spicy, civil, excellent essay! Also loved seeing your thoughts in Laura's series :)
Thanks Kayla! Glad we were able to accomplish the complex duo of spicy AND civil

Thank you! And I appreciate how you phrased that - the population it needs to serve
